Top tips for glowing skin from holistic health coach Shannon Tang

After working on taking a more holistic approach to health, I’ve tested the waters and have found what works for me when it comes to achieving and maintaining glowy skin. Adding Iluminos’ ingestible wellness supplements into my morning routine does a lot of the hard work for me! Their products boost my gut health, improve my collagen production and protect my skin against free radicals. This ultimately leads to a clearer, smoother and more supple complexion. The team behind Iluminos believes that beauty starts from within, and I couldn’t agree more with the brand’s ethos. Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way that have boosted my skin health!

1. HYDRATION

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but hydration is the key to glowing skin! If you struggle to drink a lot of water throughout the day, I always recommend adding Iluminos’ Nordic Marine Collagen into your drink of choice.

Not only does their powder taste amazing (and there’s no fishy flavour), but it’s rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and phenolic compounds that work to rehydrate parched skin, soothe dry patches, and minimise signs of redness and irritation. To support optimal hydration and boost my collagen production, I also add their Rejuvenate powder to my smoothie or breaky bowl. It’s formulated to support your body against free radical damage and includes antioxidants that contain anti-inflammatory properties beneficial to skin health.

Unlike other beauty supplements on the market, Iluminos sources its raw materials ethically and sustainably for the least amount of environmental impact. The team behind the brand care about our oceans and marine life, and want to ensure our seas are teeming with life for generations to come.

2. SLEEP

This one is no secret! Stick to the basics when taking care of yourself and the results will come! Having a consistent and healthy sleeping pattern is vital when it comes to promoting clear and healthy skin. While you sleep, your body is repairing while your cells are rebuilding, and renewing. Missing out on a good night’s rest will ultimately take a toll on your skin, health and overall wellbeing.

Everyone’s ideal sleep times are different so work out when you feel best! For me, I like to get 7-8 hours of sleep, going to bed at around 10 or 10.30 pm and waking up at 5.30 to 6.30 am.

Getting to sleep and waking up early is also necessary when it comes to keeping your mind and body fresh and energised. If you have difficulties falling asleep, my top tips are:

  • Reducing screen time before 10 pm
  • Winding down with a book
  • Listening to a sleep meditation podcast
  • Taking good quality magnesium

Win the morning, win the day!

3. STRESS

Managing your stress levels is extremely important— it dictates how you feel and look. I find that when I’m stressed, it pours into other areas of my life. I feel unmotivated and unfocused, my skin looks dull, I get breakouts, my diet slips and my sleep quality isn’t on track.

We know that stress also has a serious impact on your gut health. The gut is where so many important functions take place; hormone and neurotransmitter production, synthesis of nutrients, and immune modulation to name a few. If these functions are impaired and your gut is inflamed or irritated, it shows in your skin.

To combat this, I supplement with Iluminos’ Gut Replenish. It not only promotes and nourishes the happy microbiomes in my gut but contains prebiotics and probiotics that keep the trouble-making bacteria at bay. Their product is made with pink dragonfruit, apple cider vinegar, Subfibre, Australian Kakadu plum and organic green banana resistant starch powder.

How else do I reduce my stress levels? Meditation, journaling and movement. Meditation and breathwork instantly de-stress the body, making you feel calm and centred. Journaling is an outlet that also enables you to express your thoughts and feelings. Question why you feel a certain way and think about how you can see things from a different perspective. You’ll be surprised at how relieved you feel just by putting your pen to paper!

Moving your body is also key. Sometimes the best way to get out of your head is to get into your body and move! This doesn’t have to be extreme exercise either, just a simple walk can do wonders!

4. DIET

I am not keen on restrictive diets as I’ve been down that path and believe it leads to a negative relationship with food, body image, and thoughts.

Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat, focus on what you can eat more of that will fuel your body and keep you full. This is called the ‘crowd out’ technique, where there is actually no longer room for junk or processed foods in your life because you are filling yourself up with whole foods, good quality proteins, healthy fats and carbs that satiate you.

Never restrict yourself. Eat things in moderation.

Never restrict yourself and eat things in moderation! While eating processed and sugary foods aren’t great, having a little treat or finding alternatives will keep you mentally and physically satisfied. Just make sure you’re doing it out of self-love and not out of self-hate. I believe that the energy and thoughts you have around food will alter the way it gets processed in your body too. There have been many times when I’ve eaten in a stressed state and it made me feel bloated because the food did not digest well. But when I eat in a relaxed and calm state with no technology and distractions, I enjoy my meal so much more and I can process the foods I’m eating and easily recognise when I’m getting full.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE

So there you have it! They’re my top four tips when it comes to achieving glowy and radiant skin. Most of them are centred around working on yourself internally. When you take care of your body, I promise it will thank you for it.

Working on your happiness and maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle will not only transform your skin but your perspective in other areas of your life. Creating rituals (like a healthy morning routine) are great ways to ensure I stick to these habits and make them enjoyable!
