Drum roll, please… Iluminos is the first Australian ingestible beauty supplement brand to have a collagen product that is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified!
Founded in 1996, the global non-for-profit’s sole purpose is to eradicate overfishing while restoring and ensuring sustainable fish stocks for future generations. The bluefish tick and fishery certification program contributes to maintaining the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and working with our partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.
The MSC recognises that communities rely on fishing for their livelihood, hence why they operate on the core principle that our waters are not overfished. The organisation manages fishing activity extremely carefully so that other species and habitats within the ecosystem remain intact. These improvements not only benefit marine mammals, marine reptiles and their habitats, but guarantee other species and habitats within the ecosystem remain healthy.
Iluminos chooses to follow the organisation’s strict guidelines because we believe this is a leap in the right direction and we’re committed to doing what is most sustainable for our oceans and marine life. From tracking the vessels that caught the fish to ensuring sustainable fishing practices are adhered to no matter what, it’s a long process that is closely evaluated before beauty supplement brands (like us!) are granted the blue MSC ecolabel.
MSC’s guidelines
The MSC Fisheries Standard was developed in consultation with a range of people and organisations around the world, including government academics, researchers, the fishing industry and NGOs.
Here are the specific guidelines you must meet in order to obtain the label:
- Sustainable Fish Stocks; Are enough fish left in the ocean? Fishing must be at a level that ensures it can continue indefinitely and the fish population can remain productive and healthy.
- What are the impacts? Fishing activity must be managed carefully so that other species and habitats within the ecosystem remain healthy.
- Are operations well managed? MSC certified fisheries must comply with relevant laws and be able to adapt to changing environmental circumstances
The history of MSC explained
In 1999, the MSC also developed the ‘Chain of Custody’ certification program to reduce seafood fraud (when one fish species is substituted for another, predominantly for financial gain without the consumer knowing) and solidify effective traceability systems. One system being DNA testing which is a program used to monitor and verify the authenticity of products carrying the blue MSC Ecolabel and the effectiveness of the MSC Chain of Custody certification program.
Between 2009 and 2016, the MSC commissioned DNA tests on 1402 MSC certified products from 27 species of fish across 18 countries. The outcome revealed that 99.1% of MSC labelled seafood is correctly labelled, which is a positive result and reinforces the effectiveness of the MSC Chain of Custody program and traceability systems that are in place.
