We’re heading into Winter and for some of us, that means we’re preparing ourselves for the unpleasant side effects that come with cooler weather— drier, itchier, and flakier skin. Uh, the absolute worst!
While switching to a deeply hydrating moisturiser at the first sign of chill won’t hurt, sometimes our skin needs more than that! Rather than blowing your budget on pricey products, have you ever thought about whipping up your own face mask at home? All the ingredients you need to combat dry skin and boost your glow are most likely hiding in your kitchen pantry!
Let’s run through our favourite DIY face masks that’ll help improve your skin’s moisture, so you can illuminate from the inside out all year round!
Soothe dry skin with this olive oil cleanser
Olive oil has been used on the skin since ancient times. It works as a natural cleanser and moisturiser and is safe to use on the skin daily. It won’t strip your natural oils, meaning you can apply it to dry, red and flaky patches, or use it as an all-over moisturiser. Simply rub the oil into your skin and drape a warm, damp cloth over your face until it cools. After a few minutes, wipe away the excess oil.
Studies have shown that olive oil also prevents signs of premature ageing and sun damage thanks to a host of antioxidants that are found in this potent ingredient. It also contains an ingredient called squalene, which is extremely hydrating! In general, most skin types can benefit from olive oil, however, those with acne or blemishes on their skin should steer clear as it has the potential to clog your pores.
Calm your skin instantly with this avocado and honey face mask

This is one of our all time favourite at-home masks. The coconut oil delivers deep hydration, the honey will give your body a much-needed hit of antioxidants and the lavender oil will soothe your stressed skin and decrease signs of hyperpigmentation and redness. Avocado is a great ingredient when it comes to your overall skin health and works to heal dry, flaky and irritable patches. The natural oils in this delicious vegetable deeply penetrate the skin to nourish, soften and hydrate, all while keeping the skin flexible and moisturized. It boosts your skin’s immunity against stress and environmental factors that can cause damage.
All you’re going to need is:
- One teaspoon of honey
- One teaspoon of coconut oil
- ¼ ripe avocado smashed
- 2 drops of lavender oil
Simply mix these ingredients together and paint the paste on your face with a clean makeup brush. Let it soak in for around 10 to 15 minutes and then wash your face with warm (not hot) water!
